Face Shape Fitting 101: A Guide

Picking a new pair of sunglasses might be the only time you’ll ever find yourself uttering the phrase “what face shape am I?” Most of us have tried on different frames in a shop, maybe with a friend or significant other, only to find that some pairs just don’t work for us. Face shape is usually the reason.

A good rule of thumb when thinking about which sunglasses will suit your face shape is to pick frames that are different to the shape of your face. However, there are various other factors to consider here – hair colour, your fashion sense and the length of your face all play a part too.

Let’s get into what you should be thinking about when looking for sunglasses for your face shape.

Round

If you’ve got a round face, you probably won’t want to audition for any Harry Potter reboot. Circular frames accentuate this face shape, making it look shorter and wider than it is. Square or angular frames, on the other hand, will offset all of that roundness.

With their angular shape, and bulk that disguises a large head, our DELTA frames are perfect for hiding roundness. If oversized isn’t your thing, try our SMILE frames instead.

Square

A square jaw is associated with handsome actors from black and white movies but, if you try to pair them with square frames, you risk looking like Spongebob. Go with rounded corners to offset an angular face, taking care to match your face’s width if possible.

There’s nothing harsh about our BULLRUN frames, with rarely a right angle in sight! Our SMILE frames is also a possibility, but these and the DELTA lean towards squarer shape.

Oblong

Counterintuitively, since an oblong is closer to a circle than a square, advice here is similar to that for those with square heads. Soft lines look best here, with an extra bit of height if you can get it. Very square frames risk accentuating your face’s edges.

The rounded corners of our SMILE frames are ideal for an oblong face shape. For larger heads, the added width and height of the DELTA will work perfectly.

Oval

Those with an oval face should get used to making enemies when trying on frames with other people, because almost all types of frames work on this face shape. The only exception is that very wide frames will make your head look narrow.

Our BULLRUN and SMILE frames are classic silhouettes that look great on an oval face. The DELTA is also a contender, especially on longer faces, but they are our widest frames.

It’s hard to go wrong with an oval face — most sunglasses will look great on you. Just make sure the frames aren’t wider than your face.

Of course, fashion is not an exact science. Whether you’re trying to emulate a favourite celebrity or just go against the grain, you shouldn’t be afraid to break the rules. You know what suits your face better than anyone, and it’s always a good idea to try on frames if you can. And our easy returns process – all orders come with a reusable mailer box – lets you do just that.

Frame Fitting 101: What Colour Sunglasses Suit My Hair Colour?

From all black Wayfarers in the 1950s to the popularity of tortoiseshell Clubmasters in the 1980s, the “best colour” for sunglasses is influenced as much by the time period as it is by your fashion sense. However, there’s one other factor that remains a constant throughout: Hair colour.

In addition to face shape, it’s worth thinking about your hair colour (whether natural or artificial) when you’re buying new sunglasses because certain shades just don’t look quite right together.

Blonde/Light Brown

Pair light-coloured hair with light frames and you risk looking seriously washed out. Lighter coloured hair and pale skin really makes dark frames pop, letting your shades draw attention to your face.

Dark Brown

Like those with oval faces, you can get away with about anything if you have dark hair. So much for blondes having more fun! Dark frames ooze effortless cool, or make a statement with bright frames.

Red/Auburn

Natural redheads do well with warm colours – tortoiseshell, browns etc. – because they bring out different tones in your hair. As for dye jobs, are you brave enough to match it up with Rippin Red?

Grey/Silver

For the silver foxes, black is always in because it creates a unique monochromatic look. Or, for something a little brighter, show off that youthful spirit with a pop of colour.
